Congratulations! You’ve finally moved into your dream home on Florida’s gorgeous Gulf Coast. You can’t wait to stroll on pristine beaches, indulge in local cuisine, and check out some of the cultural attractions.

You can’t wait to turn on your air conditioner, either, to ward off Florida’s hot, humid air. Since you’ll be running the AC a lot, it’s prudent to have it regularly maintained, even when there aren’t problems, so your dream home doesn’t turn into a nightmare.

Now that you and Port Richey’s Progressive Air Systems are neighbors, you can conveniently count on us for all of your AC needs.

Here’s a sampling of the many air conditioning malfunctions we can resolve.

1. Leaks Caused by a Clogged or Damaged Drain Pan

The drain pan, or condensate pan, is an AC component that catches condensation from the evaporator coils. When condensation leaves the condenser coils, it falls into the drain pan, where it is directed to a pipe that carries the liquid out of the house.

Drain pans can become clogged with mildew or mold. When this happens, water backs up into the pan and spills over its sides, puddling around the unit and even waterlogging your walls or floors.

2. Leaky Evaporator Coils

An evaporator coil cools hot air before it blows into your house.

Typically, erosion causes evaporator coil leaks. The constant flow of refrigerant can eventually wear away the coil’s lining. It can also be caused by wear and tear that comes with age.

Evaporator coil leaks are tricky because they can be almost imperceptible. No matter how small they are, however, they can be damaging. A leak bleeds out refrigerant, causing your AC to struggle to run and possibly have a complete breakdown.

3. Frozen Evaporator Coils

As the evaporator coils absorb heat from your home’s air, condensation builds upon them. If something interferes with this, such as blocked supply vents or debris, the condensation freezes and causes your unit to malfunction or completely break down.

4. Strange Noises

Your AC typically makes soft sounds when it’s turning on, running, or turning off. However, it’s not supposed to sound like Armageddon. If you hear these noises, you may have a problem:

  • Banging – Banging indicates a broken or loose part.
  • Rattling – Like banging, rattling is associated with a part that’s broken or loose. It could also signal that the system is clogged with debris.
  • Screaming – These unsettling sounds could mean that you have a refrigerant leak.

5. Air Duct Leaks

Air duct leaks can spiral your energy bills out of control. They can also cause your system to struggle to do its job, potentially driving it to a breakdown. Leaky air ducts contribute to dusty indoor air and create uneven hotspots throughout your house.

6. Burnt Capacitors

Capacitors are two electrically charged AC components that get the AC up and running and keep it running. One is the start capacitor, which supplies a jolt of electricity to fire up the AC. The other is the run capacitor, which keeps the motor operating. If a capacitor shuts down, the entire AC will shut down too.

It makes sense to have a regular maintenance plan in place so that problems can be avoided or nipped in the bud. That’s why Progressive Air Systems offers two maintenance plans to keep your AC in tip-top shape. One is perfect for you.
